Quick Verdict

Sony WH-1000XM5 delivers exceptional noise cancellation, premium comfort, and outstanding battery life, making it one of the best headphones available today.

Overview

When Sony announced the WH-1000XM5, the audio world held its breath. Its predecessor, the XM4, had comfortably held the crown for the best noise-canceling headphones for years. The XM5 isn’t just an iterative update; it represents a complete redesign of Sony’s flagship line from the ground up.

Gone are the familiar folding hinges and bulky headbands. In their place is a sleeker, more aerodynamic design that favors aesthetics and structural integrity over compact foldability. But the real magic happens inside the earcups, where Sony has implemented dual processors and eight microphones to deliver what we consider the most impressive noise cancellation available to consumers today.

Design & Comfort

The most controversial aspect of the WH-1000XM5 is undoubtedly its design. By removing the hinges that allowed previous models to fold into a compact ball, Sony has prioritized a cleaner silhouette and fewer points of mechanical failure. The new design is undeniably more premium, featuring a stepless slider and a narrower headband wrapped in a synthetic leather material that feels incredibly soft against the skin.

At 250 grams, they are remarkably light. The clamping force has been perfectly calibrated to ensure they stay on your head during brisk walks without causing pressure fatigue over long listening sessions. We wore these for an 8-hour international flight and experienced zero physical discomfort—a testament to the new earcup padding which provides better weight distribution than the XM4.

Sound Quality

Sony has moved from a 40mm driver to a newly designed 30mm carbon fiber composite driver. While a smaller driver might seem like a downgrade on paper, the resulting sound profile is noticeably more refined and controlled than its predecessor.

The bass response is tighter and punchier, avoiding the slight muddying that sometimes plagued the XM4s on bass-heavy tracks. The midrange is beautifully articulate, bringing vocals forward with stunning clarity. Highs sparkle without ever becoming piercing. Support for LDAC ensures hi-res audio streaming for compatible devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sony WH-1000XM5 worth the price?

For those who value premium noise cancellation, exceptional comfort, and top-tier sound quality, yes. They are a significant investment, but their durability, battery life, and everyday utility justify the cost for remote workers, commuters, and audiophiles alike.

The XM5 utilizes dual processors and eight microphones (compared to the XM4’s single processor and four mics), resulting in significantly better attenuation of mid-to-high frequency noises like human voices and street noise, while maintaining the excellent low-frequency (engine drone) cancellation.

We do not recommend the WH-1000XM5 for heavy exercise. They lack an official IP water or sweat resistance rating. While they won’t break immediately from light sweat, consistent exposure to moisture could damage the synthetic leather earcups and internal electronics over time.

In our testing, they consistently hit the advertised 30 hours with ANC turned on at roughly 75% volume. Without ANC, you can push them closer to 40 hours. The quick charge feature is also excellent, providing about 3 hours of playback from just a 3-minute charge via USB-PD.

Yes, this is one of the biggest improvements over the XM4. Sony’s “Precise Voice Pickup” technology uses beamforming microphones and AI machine learning to isolate your voice and suppress background noise. They are excellent for Zoom calls and outdoor phone calls, even in windy conditions.
